Welcome to Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary

baby birdsOur lifelong passion for animals led to the creation of Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary in 2004.  We believe that wild creatures are a part of the whole that includes humans and that the circle needs to be in balance for all our sakes.

John Muir, an early 20th century environmentalist observed, “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” It is up to humans, who create an imbalance by invading natural habitats, to rebalance the circle.

The stewardship role we’ve chosen is to care for injured and orphaned wildlife in Central Virginia. The Sanctuary has staff, interns and volunteers assisting us with ensuring the health and well-being of the wild animals placed in our care.

Every breeding animal that can be released back into the wild helps to ensure the survival of our local wild species. More and more of Virginia’s native animals are in need of Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary’s care. In 2010, we expect to treat over 700 animals. We invite you to help us meet this challenge!

What if I find an injured animal?

If you find a sick, injured or potentially orphaned wild animal in need of care

contact the Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary ASAP at:
434-831-2900 or 434-962-7429

We will be able to advise you on how best to proceed.
If you are unable to reach us, call the Wildlife Center of Virginia at 540-942-9453.

PLEASE NOTE: Special care should be taken in dealing with high-risk rabies species - such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, bats and groundhogs. Wear gloves and try to guide the animal into a box or crate without picking it up.

KEEP IN MIND that sometimes the very BEST thing you can do for a wild animal is LEAVE IT ALONE! Find out more in RESCUE ADVICE.
